Bradford Village is an Assisted Living Center located in Edmond, Oklahoma. The center holds residents who can live independently but need help with daily tasks. The design makes a comfortable transition for those leaving their homes while creating a space that encourages those residing to be active residents. Overall, the design concept pulls from the characteristics of the traditional tepees used by the Native American Plains Tribes in Oklahoma. Tepees are essentially portable homes that the Plain Tribes could take up and transport to their next destination, much like the residents are as they move from their homes to the Assisted Living Center. In addition to the application of the characteristics of the tepee, Universal Design is incorporated into each room to create a safe, functional home. The colors and wooden elements reflect the tepee through the principle of line and the use of natural materials. Textural details generate stimulating environments within each room of the living center. With each lighting layer all residents have optimal light to transition through the building and to perform tasks. Together, all the elements work to execute a design that draws from the first homes of the Native American Plains Tribes and implements Universal Design to make a home for everyone at the Bradford Village Assisted Living Center.
